A fault-line in the rock has caused this impressive structure to become detached, forming a natural gateway into that part of the Chartreuse that contains the Monastery and its many associated buildings and more remote habitations.
The painting captures today's view of the Pic showing that remarkably little - beyond an improved roadway - has changed here since the days of the earliest travellers.
