Fribourg - Poya Bridge - Switzerland

Fribourg - Poya Bridge - Switzerland
Sculptural Watercolour® in a box frame 60 x 80 x 5 cm
| Fribourg in Switzerland is one of the artist's favourite small cities as its very undulating terrain together with so many old buildings offer a plethora of wonderful landscape views. The painting presents the new Poya Bridge against a backdrop of the medieval city. This architecturally splendid bridge was opened in 2014, and the painting was completed to mark the event. This was a festive affair that commenced with a mass walk over the bridge at 9 in the morning and ended with a free band concert in the tunnel section from 9 in the evening. This chimed well with Fribourg's suspension bridges; dismantled many decades earlier. The first, the Zaehringen cable suspension bridge - that had an entirely wooden roadway - was for several years the longest of its type in the world. It too had a festive official opening - that had been preceded by an interesting demonstration of confidence in its structural strength: 12 gun-carriages, 50 horses and 300 people on it ! |
